The Silver Petticoat Book Club Announcement: Dive Into ‘Jane Eyre’ for June and July 2021

One of the reasons we created this book club was to share our love of books with all of you, and that involves introducing you to some of our personal favorites. Each book is chosen with care and specific reasons in mind.

For this month, we’ve picked one of our all-time favorite books. This classic love story is timeless, beautifully written, and was incredibly influential during the Victorian Era. We hope you’ll join us this month to read it together!

Book Club Update

Before we reveal this month’s book, we have a small update on how our book club discussions will work. We’ve decided to encourage more in-person (or Zoom) discussions with your friends, family, or local chapter of the Silver Petticoat Book Club.

We will still have online discussions on Facebook, Goodreads, and Instagram, but we believe meeting in person can be more enjoyable. To make these meetings easier, we now have Downloadable Discussion Questions available for you.

Additionally, instead of releasing the discussion questions in the final week, we now post them during the last few days of the month. For our current two-month selection, this means discussions will start around July 28, 2021, giving you a few extra days to finish the book.

The Silver Petticoat Book Club Reveal for June and July 2021

Our pick for June and July 2021 is “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë. Recognized as a Gothic masterpiece and featured on numerous “best books” lists, this novel is more than just a love story. It’s a bildungsroman about a young woman who asserts her independence and fights for equality.

This novel was revolutionary in its portrayal of women and its use of a personal narrative. Jane Eyre’s protagonist is fascinating and unique, while her love interest, Mr. Rochester, is a complex Byronic Hero. This archetype has influenced many characters in today’s literature and media. “Jane Eyre” is a captivating read that still offers relevant lessons today. We hope you’ll join us in reading it!

Book Synopsis from Penguin Classics

Orphaned Jane Eyre has a tough childhood with her unkind aunt and cousins, then at the harsh Lowood School. However, things get better, and Jane remains as a teacher, always longing for love and friendship. She believes she might find them at Mr. Rochester’s house, where she works as a governess, until she discovers a devastating secret in the attic.
