I’ve been eagerly waiting for Max and Helen from “New Amsterdam” to get together. Their chemistry has been undeniable since season one. They had a professional and personal connection, even though a romance wasn’t feasible back then because Max was married. The actors, Freema Agyeman and Ryan Eggold, made it clear that something special was brewing between their characters.
Even though both characters pushed their feelings aside, it was evident they were destined to be more than friends. Max’s wife, Georgia, tragically passed away, and in his grief, he kept his distance from Helen. He was likely wrestling with guilt and denial about his feelings for her, compounded by his love for his late wife.
Throughout the series, Helen and Max kept suppressing their growing bond. Helen moved on, dating other men, while Max buried himself in work, trying to make a difference. But by season three, it became clear that Max had deep feelings for Helen. There was a pivotal moment when someone asked Max if he ever loved a Black woman; his pause spoke volumes about his feelings for Helen.
In a memorable episode, there was almost a kiss on the hospital’s rooftop, signaling that Max was ready to take their relationship to the next level. Unfortunately, Helen was not ready at that moment. The tension was palpable.
Fast forward to the episode “Things Fall Apart,” where a dangerous chemical spill threatens the whole hospital, leading Max on a frantic search to fix it. In the midst of his efforts, he gets drenched in chemicals and becomes temporarily blind. Helen, worried for Max, finds him and convinces him to let go to prevent a larger disaster. She gets him to safety, screaming for help when they encounter Dr. Reynolds, who delivers the grim news about the chemical exposure’s potential fatal consequences.
During the intense decontamination shower scene, Helen tenderly helps Max clean up as they are both drenched. The moment is visually powerful, capturing their deep emotional connection without the need for words or explicit content. They look at each other with raw emotion, finally acknowledging their mutual love.
Thankfully, Dr. Reynolds finds a treatment for Max, and he is out of danger. As Max awakens, he and Helen share a quiet, heartfelt exchange, culminating in Max confessing his feelings in a roundabout way. They almost share a kiss, only to be interrupted by a ringing phone, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
It’s clear that a kiss between Max and Helen is inevitable, and fans can’t wait for that moment to happen. Do you think Max and Helen’s romantic journey will culminate in a kiss by the season’s end? Share your thoughts in the comments!
