September 2019 marked the 10th anniversary of The Vampire Diaries. That’s right, it’s been over a decade since we first met the enchanting and mysterious characters of Mystic Falls. While the series had its highs and lows during its eight-season run, it remained a compelling show. To celebrate, I thought it would be fun to revisit the standout feature of the show: The Vampire Diaries couples.
One of the best parts of watching the show was “shipping” different characters together. But let’s be honest, the love triangle between Damon, Elena, and Stefan captured everyone’s attention from the beginning.
Although some romantic pairings were more successful than others, many played a crucial role in making the show memorable. So, let’s dive into the best couples from The Vampire Diaries.
The Best Vampire Diaries Couples, Ranked
25. Tyler and Vicki
Tyler and Vicki were a difficult couple to root for. Tyler was far from an ideal boyfriend, and in today’s context, their relationship is particularly hard to digest, especially with an inappropriate scene in the pilot episode. Still, Tyler and Vicki were great characters—just not together.
24. Matt and Elena
Matt and Elena had a sweet, innocent teenage romance. However, as Elena pointed out, there was no real passion. It wasn’t surprising that she moved on to fall in love with the mysterious new student, Stefan, after breaking up with Matt.
23. Jeremy and Vicki
Jeremy treated Vicki with more respect compared to Tyler, but the two didn’t quite match. Jeremy’s puppy-like affection for Vicki was endearing but ultimately didn’t lead anywhere meaningful.
22. Alaric and Caroline
While Alaric and Caroline’s relationship spun off the fun new series, Legacies, they were never a believable couple. However, it is cool that they got their own show out of it.
21. Bonnie and Jeremy
Bonnie and Jeremy were cute together initially, but their relationship lacked tension, chemistry, and authenticity. They were alright together but not extraordinary.
20. Tyler and Liv
Tyler and Liv had undeniable on-screen chemistry, but as a couple, they weren’t particularly memorable.
19. Rose and Damon
Though their relationship was brief, Rose quickly became one of the only people Damon cared about. There was something profoundly interesting about her.
18. Nora and Mary Louise
Nora and Mary Louise, despite their narcissistic and psychotic tendencies, had an unbreakable bond.
17. Alaric and Meredith
In the books, Meredith and Alaric are deeply devoted. In the series, their relationship was short-lived but had potential. It was unfortunate that their pairing didn’t develop further.
16. Stefan and Valerie
Valerie was Stefan’s first love, separated by unfortunate circumstances. While they didn’t work out, Valerie remained an intriguing character.
15. Damon and Katherine
Katherine and Damon’s tumultuous relationship was entertaining, filled with great scenes of vampiric scheming. Although they didn’t bring out the best in each other, they were fun to watch.
14. Caroline and Matt
Caroline and Matt were a strong couple initially. However, once Caroline became a vampire, Matt couldn’t accept her, marking the end of their serious relationship.
13. Alaric and Jenna
Alaric and Jenna were a cute couple with lots of potential until Jenna’s untimely death. They were great together while they lasted.
12. Caroline and Tyler
Caroline and Tyler had a star-crossed romance that showed promise until jealousy, anger, and poor decisions tore them apart. They could have been end game if the writers had taken a different path.
11. Jeremy and Anna
Jeremy and Anna were an adorable couple, but their relationship was cut short when Anna became a ghost and moved on to the other side.
10. Stefan and Caroline
Stefan and Caroline took time to grow on viewers, but their relationship eventually blossomed. Despite their tragic ending, they demonstrated how best friends can make great romantic partners.
9. Rebekah and Matt
Rebekah Mikaelson and Matt had an explosive chemistry. Rebekah wished to be a normal teenage girl, and Matt appreciated her spontaneity. However, Matt couldn’t handle a supernatural relationship.
8. Stefan and Lexi
While Stefan and Lexi remained best friends, Lexi’s love for him was evident. Their sizzling chemistry on screen made fans wish for more.
7. Caroline and Klaus
Initially captivating, Caroline and Klaus moved on to other epic loves—Klaus with Camille in The Originals and Caroline with Stefan. Still, their relationship remains a favorite among fans.
6. Alaric and Jo
Alaric and Jo had a tragic but unforgettable love story. Their twins, Josie and Lizzie, became central characters in Legacies, keeping their epic romance alive.
5. Stefan and Katherine
Stefan was Katherine’s true love, even though she was too selfish to make a romance work. Their relationship added fabulous drama to the series.
4. Bonnie and Damon
Upon re-watching the series, it’s clear there was an unspoken romantic connection between Bonnie and Damon, especially after their time in the prison world.
3. Stefan and Elena
The Stefan and Elena relationship was a cornerstone of the series. Their epic romance was a favorite among fans.
2. Bonnie and Enzo
Bonnie and Enzo shared one of the most emotional and romantic love stories in the series. Their chemistry was undeniable.
1. Damon and Elena
Damon and Elena had an intense, passionate romance exemplified by their undeniable chemistry. Elena helped Damon become a better man, and they eventually found a way to be happy together.
When Do Damon And Elena Get Together?
Damon and Elena officially became a couple in Season 4, Episode 7. Elena’s sire bond to Damon initially raised questions about the authenticity of her feelings. However, once the sire bond was removed, it was clear her love was real. She chose Damon for good in Season 4, Episode 23. Despite the ups and downs, they ended up happy together.
