Book Blurb
Isobel Kennilworth Aiken, the young widow of the late Duke of Warwick, feels surprisingly optimistic about her future as she awaits the reading of her husband’s will. Her six-year marriage had been devoid of love, and at 24, she is eager to start anew. However, during the reading, Isobel learns that her husband had another legal wife and a son, Reggie, who is now the Duke of Warwick. This revelation leaves Isobel and Reginald’s brother, Charles, stunned, dashing their hopes for the future.
Isobel must now navigate life as Miss Kennilworth, a scandal-tainted woman in Regency England. She faces the challenge of rebuilding her reputation and finding her place in society. Along the way, she contemplates rekindling relationships with Andrew Stafford, her childhood sweetheart, who is now Lord Saybrooke, and Jeremy Ingles, Lord Westcott, with whom she had a past romantic connection.
Before she can find true love, Isobel must confront her past mistakes and the people she has wronged. She needs to discover her identity beyond the title of duchess.
Book Review
“Her Grace in Disgrace” by Claudia Harbaugh is a delightful dive into Regency England, showcasing the limited choices women had during that era. The book brilliantly portrays the societal rules and class distinctions of the time.
An Unlikely Heroine
Isobel Kennilworth is not your typical heroine. She is flawed—selfish, cold, and stubborn—with a past filled with ruthless choices, such as forcing the Duke into a scandalous marriage and ruining another woman’s reputation. Despite these negative traits, Isobel’s imperfections make her a compelling character, one who needs redemption. Her journey towards self-discovery and growth keeps readers engaged, compelling them to root for her transformation.
The Romance
The romance between Isobel and Andrew is a standout aspect of the book. Their relationship is reminiscent of Austen’s “Emma,” filled with Isobel’s schemes and Andrew’s preachy nature. The dual perspectives of their inner thoughts and desires make it easy to root for their happy ending, while also highlighting their individual flaws. Their love story pulls at the heartstrings as readers wonder if these childhood sweethearts can overcome Isobel’s tarnished reputation.
Supporting Characters
The supporting characters enrich the story significantly. Isobel is shunned by society, but characters like Joanna, with her fiery spirit and disregard for social norms, offer a refreshing contrast. Joanna’s defiance and spirited dialogue make her a standout character. Charles, the rogue with a gambling problem but a good heart, also adds depth to the narrative.
Overall Thoughts
“Her Grace in Disgrace” has its share of minor flaws, including a confusing narrative style initially and a few editorial errors. However, once past these issues, the story becomes a compelling read. Themes of friendship, forgiveness, and grace are beautifully woven into the narrative, leaving readers with a sense of satisfaction and perhaps a desire to bring some goodness into their own lives.
Adaptation Recommendation
This novel would be perfect for a made-for-TV movie, much like “The Inheritance” adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s work. It would be a great fit for an uplifting Hallmark film.
Content Note
The book contains no profanity or explicit scenes, making it suitable for a wide audience.
Overall Rating
“I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
