Prologue
Belleville, Ontario, Canada
May 1909

Grace McAlister clung to her sister Katie’s hand as they walked through Belleville Town Hall. Katie assured Grace they were meeting their new family, but Grace was anxious. “What if they’re not nice?” she asked.

Katie tried to comfort her, suggesting that anyone willing to adopt children must have a kind heart, though her worry was evident.

As they joined other girls along the wall, Grace felt the absence of their family more deeply and wished she had eaten more breakfast. Miss Delaney, who accompanied them from England, instructed the girls to stand straight and be respectful.

When a man and woman walked in, they inspected each girl. The woman, in a dress the color of pennies, seemed kind but walked past them. Grace wondered if they would be chosen by anyone.

Soon, Miss Delaney announced that the couple wanted to talk to Grace. Katie reminded Grace to mention they were sisters and needed to stay together.

Grace found herself in front of the couple, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton. She was shy and struggled to respond to their questions. Mrs. Hamilton gently probed about her interests and reassured her, despite Grace’s reluctance to speak.

The Hamiltons decided to take Grace. Panicked about separating from Katie, Grace resisted, but Mrs. Hamilton persisted. Despite Grace’s cries and struggles, Mr. Hamilton carried her out of the room, and she lost sight of her sister.
