The Peraltiago ship isn’t the only reason to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but it’s a pretty compelling one. If you don’t already tune in, you might know B99 as the show that was canceled by Fox last year, only for the internet to erupt in protest. Thanks to the massive support from fans—including celebrities like Mark Hamill, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Josh Groban—NBC picked up the show, and it’s now in its sixth season. So, if you’re still not watching, you might be wondering what all the excitement is about.
I could rave endlessly about why this is one of the best shows on TV, but I’ll focus on just one thing: the OTP of B99, Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago, or “Peraltiago” as the fans call them.
Melissa Fumero plays Amy, and Andy Samberg plays Jake. They are detectives at the Nine-Nine, a Brooklyn precinct, and much of the show revolves around their rivalry turned friendship, and eventually, romance.
I’ve been rooting for Peraltiago since the pilot episode; it’s been the gift that keeps on giving. So let’s dive into the top ten best Peraltiago moments from the first five seasons. (Spoiler alert ahead!)
10. When Amy said she’d wait for him.
Season Four ends on a dark note: Jake and his friend Rosa are framed by a corrupt cop and face over a decade in prison. In this bleak moment, Amy promises Jake, “I’ll wait for you. And I’ll keep fighting for you, and so will everyone at the Nine-Nine. We’ll do whatever it takes.” With that, Jake goes to court with some sense of hope.
9. When Jake read Harry Potter for her.
In Season Four’s “The Fugitive,” Jake casually reveals he started reading Harry Potter because Amy loves it so much. Amy’s thrilled and they temporarily forget the suspect they’re chasing to gush about the series.
8. Their first kiss.
At the end of Season Two, things seem dire as Captain Holt is reassigned, putting the precinct in turmoil. But amidst the chaos, Amy breaks her “no-dating-cops” rule and kisses Jake in the evidence locker.
7. When they were “Johnny and Dora.”
Before their first kiss, Jake and Amy go undercover as an engaged couple. They’re so convincing that their answers about their “relationship” sound genuinely heartfelt. During the ruse, they share two kisses, and it’s clear both are affected by it.
6. When they first said, “I love you.”
In Season Three’s “The Cruise,” Amy finally says, “I love you,” to which Jake responds with his usual humor before earnestly saying, “I love you, too.” The moment is sweet, even if it’s followed by their accidental participation in a widow’s dance class.
5. “Everything’s fine. I’m talking to you.”
In Season Five, Jake is in federal prison, trying to survive while framed for a crime. He manages to get a contraband phone just to hear Amy’s voice, telling her, “Everything’s fine. I’m talking to you,” despite his dire circumstances.
4. The “worst date ever.”
Early in the show, Jake wins a bet with Amy, forcing her to go on a date with him, promising to make it the worst. Surprisingly, they end up enjoying each other’s company, and by the end of the night, even the criminals they catch are rooting for their “relationship.”
3. The wedding.
In the Season Five finale, Jake and Amy’s wedding day turns chaotic with a bomb threat and Amy’s ex-boyfriend leading the bomb squad. Despite everything, they have a perfect ceremony with all their friends and Captain Holt officiating.
2. The entirety of “Chasing Amy.”
Amy is up for her sergeant’s exam, and Jake supports her through her freak-outs. When Amy momentarily runs off, Jake finds her and reassures her about their relationship’s future, helping her make it to the exam in time.
1. The proposal.
Jake’s proposal during the yearly Halloween Heist is quintessentially them. Throughout the episode, Amy’s confident she’ll win the heist, but Jake surprises her by turning the victory into a perfect proposal. He spent his time in prison planning it, showing just how well he knows her and loves her.
