January 28, 2023, marked the 210th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in 1813. To celebrate, we decided to honor Mr. Darcy and the actors who have brought him to life.
HOW OLD IS MR. DARCY?
In the original novel, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pemberley, Derbyshire, is 28 years old. However, since he is a timeless character in classic literature, he would be 210 years old in 2023 if we count in book years.
WHO PLAYED MR. DARCY?
Many actors have taken on the role of Mr. Darcy over the last century, each bringing their own flavor to this aloof yet lovable romantic hero. Successfully portraying Mr. Darcy opposite the sharp-witted Elizabeth Bennet is no small feat, but these actors have nailed it.

1. COLIN FIRTH IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1995)
Many consider Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the BBC adaptation to be the definitive version. Despite initial reservations from his aunt, Firth’s performance became the most iconic interpretation of this beloved character.
2. MATTHEW MACFADYEN IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005)
Matthew Macfadyen brought a fresh perspective to Mr. Darcy, opting not to watch Colin Firth’s version. His portrayal, especially in the intense almost-kiss scene in the rain with Keira Knightley, added a new romantic flair to the character.
3. SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940)
Despite some unusual creative choices, such as Victorian costumes, Laurence Olivier’s passionate performance had a lasting influence on future interpretations of Mr. Darcy, including Colin Firth’s portrayal.
4. DAVID RINTOUL IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1980)
As the only Scottish actor to play Mr. Darcy, David Rintoul’s portrayal is highly regarded for its faithful and traditional approach. Rintoul continues to act, recently appearing in “The Crown.”

Matthew Rhys took on Mr. Darcy in this sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Concerned about meeting fan expectations, he studied Colin Firth’s portrayal closely and delivered a commendable performance.
7. ELLIOT COWAN IN LOST IN AUSTEN (2008)
In this creative adaptation where a modern woman meets Mr. Darcy, Elliot Cowan honors Firth’s version while adding his own touches. His commitment to the famous lake scene, done in a real white shirt, was well-received.
8. DANIEL VINCENT GORDH IN THE LIZZIE BENNET DIARIES (2012)
Appearing in only 12 episodes of the web series, Daniel Vincent Gordh’s modern take on Mr. Darcy left a strong impression, earning him a nomination for Best Actor at the Streamy Awards.
