Official Book Description of “The Merchant and the Rogue”
In London, 1865, Vera Sorokina loves losing herself in the adventurous, mysterious, and romantic stories of Penny Dreadfuls. Her daily life is mostly about running the book and print shop she owns with her father. This shop not only provides her and her father with a steady income but also allows her to help and protect the poor residents of London that she cares deeply about. Though she values the stability, Vera often feels lonely.
Brogan Donnelly, originally from Ireland, has lived in London for several years, making his living as a Penny Dreadful writer. Together with his sister, he supports the impoverished, and his involvement with the secretive Dread Penny Society gives him a sense of purpose. Still, he feels something is missing and longs for companionship.
When Vera and Brogan meet, the attraction is electric but complicated. Vera has learned from experience not to trust writers, and Brogan is suspicious about the activities at her print shop. As a dangerous criminal network led by the violent Mastiff starts threatening their neighborhood, Vera and Brogan must join forces to protect their community. To do so, they need to share and trust each other with sensitive secrets from their pasts.
Book Review of “The Merchant and the Rogue”
“The Merchant and the Rogue” is a delightful, easy read that brings back the charm of 19th-century sensation fiction and penny dreadfuls. The book features heroic characters, independent yet distressed damsels, mystery, romance, and adventure—all elements that make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
One of the unique aspects of the book is that you get three stories in one: the main narrative plus two bonus penny dreadfuls written by the characters themselves.
This historical romance, the latest from popular author Sarah M. Eden, is the third book in the Dread Penny Society series (preceded by “The Lady and the Highwayman” and “The Gentleman and the Thief”). You can enjoy it as a standalone, especially if you’re looking at it from a romantic perspective. However, the overarching mystery might be more satisfying if you read the entire series, as it adds depth and continuity.
Overall Thoughts on “The Merchant and the Rogue”
If you’re looking for a fun and escapist read, “The Merchant and the Rogue” is an excellent choice. Sarah M. Eden skillfully weaves an engaging story that keeps you hooked from beginning to end, with fantastic characters, a memorable romance, a good mystery, and more.
It’s the perfect book to enjoy on a lazy summer day, offering just the right amount of comfort. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment in the Dread Penny Society series.

The Dread Penny Society series, especially “The Merchant and the Rogue,” would make a great television series, packed with adventure, romance, mystery, and action. Imagine something like Bridgerton, but with a new story and couple each season and a more wholesome tone.
