Kiss Me Hard Before You Go Book Review

“Kiss Me Hard Before You Go” by Shannon McCrimmon is a touching romance set in the 1970s. Normally, I don’t read much fiction from that era, but I’m glad I picked up this book. The story revolves around Evie Barnes and her father, who live on a dairy farm in rural South Carolina. Each summer, her father rents out part of his land to a traveling fair, which Evie dreads because of the added work and noise. However, this summer is different as she meets Finch Mills, a lifelong carnival worker. Through this encounter, Evie starts to explore what love truly means and what is important in life.

The book has a lot going for it, starting with a fantastic cast of characters. Evie and Finch are well-developed, but even the supporting characters are interesting and worth investing in. For instance, Evie’s best friend Katie is pregnant and single. Her father is pushing her to give the baby up for adoption, but Katie is set on keeping it. Then there are the sideshow folks Evie befriends; they become like a second family to her, and the connection between them is heartwarming.

The storyline itself is captivating. “Kiss Me Hard Before You Go” begins with the familiar tale of a small-town girl yearning for a life beyond the dairy farm. Evie dreams of going to college and escaping the drudgery of farm life. She also loathes the annual fair. However, unexpected events unfold that make her appreciate the everyday magic around her. She also learns that family isn’t just about blood relations. The rural setting adds a timeless quality to the romance.

If you’re after a passionate yet heartfelt romance, Evie and Finch’s relationship fits the bill. There are no explicit scenes, but the chemistry between them is palpable. Their romance grows naturally, building slowly through mutual respect and understanding rather than a sudden, love-at-first-sight attraction. I particularly enjoyed their playful banter at the start of the novel. Their magical moments together are sure to make you smile.

Overall, this book is a dream for romance lovers. Check it out if you’re looking for a great story with a happy ending.

Adaptation Recommendation

Hallmark would have a great time adapting “Kiss Me Hard Before You Go.” The combination of romance and family themes is right up their alley. While I don’t have specific actors or actresses in mind, it wouldn’t be difficult to cast.

Content Note

There is some bad language in the book, but it’s not overwhelming.
