Julie Klassen’s new Regency Romance novel is an engaging and delightful read. Blending elements from Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charles Dickens, it delivers a gripping story with romance, mystery, suspense, and even a hint of the supernatural. It’s a page-turner filled with intriguing twists and captivating moments between its dynamic characters.
The Story
In this tale, Rebecca Lane, a lady’s companion, returns home to find her brother John struggling mentally and trying to make a name as an author. He asks Rebecca for a difficult favor—stay at Swanford Abbey to deliver his manuscript to a famous author hoping to get it published. The author, however, has a dark past with her brother, having previously stolen his work.
Despite her reservations, Rebecca goes to Swanford Abbey and finds herself reunited with Sir Frederick, her childhood crush. He didn’t see her as anything other than a girl before choosing another woman, breaking her heart. Now widowed, Sir Frederick reconnects with Rebecca, stirring old and new feelings.
When the infamous author is murdered, the story takes a turn into mystery. Sir Frederick, investigating the murder, finds multiple suspects, including Rebecca and her brother. The tension between his feelings for Rebecca and the need to find the truth creates a suspenseful narrative.
Jane Austen Meets Agatha Christie
What makes “Shadows of Swanford Abbey” so compelling is how it echoes the work of beloved authors while remaining entirely original. It integrates a Jane Austen-like romance, an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, and a ghostly figure reminiscent of Bronte’s Villette, while also nodding to Dickens and Gaskell. Fans of these classic authors will find this book irresistible, as Klassen’s storytelling keeps you hooked from start to finish, with some moments even bringing to mind shows like Downton Abbey and Grand Hotel.
Even if you don’t usually read inspirational fiction, the few moral and religious references are true to the characters and setting, adding authenticity rather than preaching. So, give this brilliant, entertaining read a chance!
