Clementine Churchill Series Coming to PBS
During the virtual Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour on July 28, 2022, MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson shared some exciting news: PBS and MASTERPIECE are developing a new limited drama series about Clementine Churchill, the wife of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
About the Series
This five-part drama will explore both the private and public aspects of Clementine Churchill’s life. Named Clementine Ogilvy Spencer Churchill, Baroness Spencer-Churchill, she was much more than just a prime minister’s wife. The series is being created by Maven Screen Media, PBS’ MASTERPIECE, Origin Pictures, and Sayoko Teitelbaum. Margaret Nagle, the talented writer behind Warm Springs and Boardwalk Empire, is penning the original scripts, promising a high-quality production.
Plot Description
The series, currently titled Mrs. Churchill, will portray significant moments in Clementine’s life. She grew up in challenging conditions, raised by an unstable mother and helping to care for her siblings. Despite her circumstances, Clementine emerged as a suffragette and worked two jobs while earning the nickname “Broke Beauty.” She stood firm on marrying for love, not wealth.
Viewers will see her courtship with Winston Churchill, the complexities of motherhood, and her strained relationship with her niece, Diana Mitford, who was influenced by fascism. The series will also cover her crucial relationship with American Harry Hopkins, FDR’s close advisor, who played a key role in supporting England during World War II, and a dramatic trip to Russia where she confronted Stalin. This show will provide a deep dive into the life of one of history’s most fascinating women.
More About the Show
Fans of historical dramas are likely to find this new PBS series about Clementine Churchill particularly riveting. According to PBS, the show will highlight “the untold story of a fiercely independent and very modern heroine” who played a crucial part in saving her country and the world from fascism, while also supporting her husband.
Production Team
Margaret Nagle, known for her exceptional writing, and Celine Rattray, cofounder of Maven, are both enthusiastic about bringing Clementine’s story to the screen. Nagle pointed out that Winston Churchill once remarked that the Second World War would have been impossible without Clementine, yet her contributions have often been overlooked. Susanne Simpson also expressed confidence that the MASTERPIECE audience will be captivated by this historical drama, emphasizing Clementine’s significant influence on world history.
Conclusion
This announcement is thrilling news for period drama enthusiasts. Clementine Churchill’s remarkable life is finally getting the attention it deserves, and viewers can look forward to a compelling series about this extraordinary woman.
