Modern Persuasion: An Enjoyable Yet Underwhelming Adaptation

Alicia Witt stars in a modern version of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, aptly titled Modern Persuasion. The story follows Wren Cosgrove, a happy, single, and dedicated workaholic who has clawed her way to the top of the corporate world. Back home every evening, her only company is her cat.

Things take a turn when Wren’s firm is hired by Owen Jasper, the man she once loved but let go. This encounter stirs up long-buried feelings, giving Wren a second chance at true love.

I had high hopes for this contemporary retelling of Persuasion, despite its mixed reviews. However, not all timeless tales transition well into the modern era.

That said, Modern Persuasion has its positives. Alicia Witt shines as the charming lead, and Bebe Neuwirth is excellent as the Aunt who convinced Wren to prioritize her career over love, leading to her initial heartbreak.

But Owen Jasper is back, offering Wren another shot at love, much like in the original story. And, Wren’s cat, adorably named Wentworth, adds a cute touch.

Surprisingly, the film stays closely aligned with the main events of the book, including the significant role of a depressed poet. However, while the screenplay attempts to cleverly update the tale, it ultimately misses the essence of Jane Austen’s work.

The film’s modern take feels forced, especially with the secondary characters who are immature and unlikeable, leaving me puzzled why Wren would keep such company.

I doubt many Austen fans will appreciate the exaggerated modern elements. On a positive note, Alicia Witt’s wardrobe is quite stylish, impressive considering the film’s limited budget.

Regarding the romance, it’s just okay. Shane McRae, who plays Owen, lacks the charm needed for the role, rendering his character rather bland. Additionally, there isn’t much chemistry between Witt and McRae.

Overall, despite my criticisms, Modern Persuasion is still worth a watch for fans of Jane Austen adaptations, especially if you’re in the mood for some light, fluffy escapism.

Rating: Suitable for ages 13 and up.
