Ruby Red Book Review

Ruby Red, originally penned in German, has made a successful jump to English and remains a beloved young adult novel. Following the entertaining adventures of Gwyneth Shepherd, the book offers a delightful and creative story that’s appealing to readers.

Gwyneth’s life is pretty typical for a high school student, especially with her close relationship with her best friend, Lesley. But everything changes drastically when she discovers a family secret—she herself possesses the time-traveling gene, not her cousin Charlotte, who has been meticulously trained for this role. Suddenly, Gwyneth finds herself swept into the past multiple times in just a few hours and becomes involved in a secret society that her family has kept hidden for generations. Alongside her in these time-traveling journeys is Gideon, an arrogant yet intriguing companion and fellow time traveler. As sparks fly between them, Gwyneth begins to unravel not just her own history but Gideon’s hidden secrets as well.

This was one of the few time-travel novels I’ve read, and I found it endlessly fascinating. The plot is engaging, and the characters are layered and full of surprises. Even Gideon, initially described as an “obnoxious know-it-all,” turns out to be considerate and gentlemanly. While some nuances may have been lost in translation from German to English, the overarching story retains its charm, setting the stage for an exciting trilogy.

Beyond a few minor criticisms, I genuinely enjoyed this book. It’s fast-paced enough to keep readers hooked, and the detailed descriptions of historical eras will captivate any fan of period dramas or history. The first-person narrative from Gwen’s perspective adds a unique touch, though the time-travel adventures are fewer than I anticipated. However, I expect more elaborate trips to the past in the sequels, Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green, which are already available in English.

Ruby Red sets a solid foundation by introducing the main characters and slowly uncovering Gwen’s past, present, and future. The London setting adds a refreshing change from the usual American backdrop, offering a unique armchair adventure thanks to the time-travel element. Fans of Doctor Who or time-travel stories will likely enjoy this YA novel, with its subtle romance building tension that promises to unfold further in the sequels.

Content Note
There’s nothing offensive in this novel. The violence is minimal, including a non-graphic duel.

Adaptation Recommendation
The German film adaptation, Rubinrot, stars Maria Ehrich as Gwendolyn and Jannis Niewöhner as Gideon. If a U.S. adaptation were made, actresses like Lily James or Daisy Ridley could be great fits for Gwen. For Gideon, actors like Jeremy Irvine or Douglas Booth might do justice to the character’s described appearance and personality.
