Whenever a new paranormal romance series comes out, I can’t help but get excited. We’ve had some mediocre ones recently (I’m looking at you, Roswell, New Mexico), so I was thrilled to dive into the adaptation of the popular book series, “A Discovery of Witches.” Being a fan of the books, I wondered if the writers could capture its magic.
Fortunately, they nailed it. Kate Brooke and Sarah Dollard, with their backgrounds in period dramas and fantasy, really understand the essence of a timeless romance and the allure of immortal vampires. Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont couldn’t have been in better hands.
Adding to the joy, we got Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode as our lead characters. The chemistry between them is palpable, making the romance intensely magnetic. You will fall in love with these characters and the story of their love. That’s why it had to be my romantic moment of the month.
DIANA AND MATTHEW – WHO THEY ARE
For those who haven’t seen it yet, “A Discovery of Witches” is based on Deborah Harkness’s bestselling novel. It follows Diana Bishop, a historian and academic researching alchemy, who also happens to be a witch with uncontrolled powers.
One day, while researching at the Bodleian Library, she picks up a book called Ashmole 782. This book is significant as it’s been missing for hundreds of years and only Diana seems able to summon it. Naturally, the supernatural world of vampires, witches, and daemons, especially the secret organization called the Congregation, become interested in her and the book. They crave the book for the essential information it holds about their existence.
Matthew Clairmont, a vampire, becomes particularly interested in both Diana and the book. Intelligent and charismatic, he feels a strong urge to protect Diana, despite also desiring her blood. Their feelings for each other grow as the dangers around them intensify.
Though the Congregation forbids relationships between vampires and witches, Matthew finds himself deeply drawn to Diana. He attempts to distance himself but eventually hides Diana at his mother’s castle to shield her from harm, leading to significant dilemmas.
Diana, on the other hand, is unwavering in her love for Matthew. Even when Matthew returns to Oxford to contemplate their future, she remains steadfast despite attempts by others, including his mother Ysabeau and her own aunts, to dissuade her. Meanwhile, back in Oxford, Matthew shares with his friend Hamish that he is in love with Diana. After discovering something intriguing about her blood, he resolves to return to her.
THE ROMANTIC REUNION – THE DEFINING MOMENT
Matthew’s return to Sept-Tours is filled with determination, making their reunion incredibly powerful. The urgency of his feelings creates an intense, passionate moment that sweeps both Diana and the audience off their feet. They possess that special “it” factor that makes their romance greatly anticipated.
As Matthew arrives, Diana runs out to meet him, demanding that he tell her how he feels. There’s a symbolic union as Matthew takes her hands and declares, “From this moment, we will always be one.” Their hands clasp, symbolizing their love and defiance of the Congregation’s rules. Finally, he professes his love, and they share a romantic and swoon-worthy kiss.
Their love story is one you won’t want to miss.
