Serafina and the Black Cloak Book Review

“Serafina and the Black Cloak” captivated me like few books ever have. Serafina, our lonely and intriguing narrator, guides us through a creepy and compelling mystery filled with rich, Dickensian-like characters and a hint of the supernatural. Once you step into the world of Biltmore Estate, there’s no turning back. The book feels like a mix of Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Dickens, Gothic Literature, and Neil Gaiman. This middle-grade novel is memorable for both children and adults alike. The story centers on Serafina, a young girl living secretly in the basement of a massive mansion adjacent to a mysterious forest. Her father has kept her existence hidden from everyone. Serafina’s pride comes from her nightly role as the estate’s rat catcher, a job she excels at. Right away, readers sense there’s something extraordinary about her, but I won’t spoil the surprise. As an engaging narrator, Serafina draws you into her world. The tension escalates when children begin to disappear, kidnapped by an unseen man with a magical black cloak. After witnessing one of these abductions, Serafina is determined to stop him and possibly save the captured child. This newfound resolve gives her the courage to break her isolation, leading her to make a new friend who helps her in her quest. Together, they aim to save the children and reveal the man’s identity, which takes them into the very forest Serafina was told to avoid. If you’re into supernatural tales, well-drawn characters, and thrilling mysteries, you’ll love “Serafina and the Black Cloak.” Don’t miss this one!

Adaptation Recommendation

With its strong Gothic atmosphere and clear narrative structure, “Serafina and the Black Cloak” would make an excellent film. The biggest challenge would be casting a talented young actress to play Serafina.
