Anne Elliot reminisces about almost getting married once, recalling how she and Wentworth were perfectly in sync. However, her family convinced her to let him go. This heartfelt confession sets the scene for Netflix’s new 2022 adaptation of “Persuasion,” based on Jane Austen’s novel.
Following the immense popularity of the Austen-inspired series “Bridgerton,” it’s no wonder Netflix chose to adapt another Austen classic. “Persuasion” centers on Anne Elliot, who reunites with her former love, Captain Wentworth, eight years after being persuaded to break off their engagement. The central question is whether they will rekindle their romance or move on to new loves.
In the trailer, Anne looks into the camera and advises viewers, “Don’t let anyone tell you how to live or who to love.” If the movie is as stunning as its trailer, it promises to become a favorite among Austen adaptations, standing alongside the 1995 “Sense and Sensibility” and “Pride and Prejudice,” or the 2005 version of the latter.
“Persuasion” will be available to stream on Netflix in the United States on July 15, 2022, at midnight MST. Jane Austen enthusiasts should mark their calendars!
Directed by Broadway and British theatre director Carrie Cracknell in her feature film debut, the new adaptation features a screenplay by Alice Victoria Winslow and Ron Bass.
The cast is led by Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot. Known for her roles in the “50 Shades” franchise and “The Lost Daughter,” Johnson adds star power to the film. Joining her is Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick Wentworth, bringing experience from “Lady Macbeth,” “Peaky Blinders,” and “My Mother and Other Strangers.” Henry Golding, famous for “Crazy Rich Asians,” plays the charming yet dubious Mr. Elliot.
The film also stars Richard E. Grant as Anne’s snobbish father Sir Walter Elliot, and Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell. Other notable cast members include Suki Waterhouse, Ben Bailey Smith, Izuka Hoyle, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Nia Towle, Edward Bluemel, Lydia Rose Bewley, and Yolanda Kettle.
Netflix’s synopsis describes Anne Elliot as a modern woman living with her snooty family, teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. She faces a dilemma when Frederick Wentworth, the one she let go, re-enters her life. She must decide whether to leave the past behind or follow her heart and give love a second chance.
The trailer’s visuals and costumes evoke memories of the 2005 “Pride and Prejudice,” combined with the clever tone of the 1999 “Mansfield Park.” The modern twist, including breaking the fourth wall, adds freshness to the story while staying true to Austen’s charm.
Filming began in May 2021 near one of Jane Austen’s former homes in Bath. Director Carrie Cracknell aimed for a playful and humorous adaptation, noting that period films often reflect the era in which they are made. This modern approach attracted Johnson to the role, appreciating the blend of contemporary language and timeless themes.
Henry Golding and Richard E. Grant enjoyed their roles, with Golding loosening up for his part and Grant embracing the flamboyant nature of his character. This adaptation promises to be a humorous take on Austen while maintaining authenticity.
If you haven’t read Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” now is a great time to do so before the movie’s release. The novel, considered her most moving, tells the story of Anne Elliot’s second chance at love with Captain Wentworth.
