Dive into April 2021 with The Silver Petticoat Book Club's Pick: 'Pride and Prejudice'

The Silver Petticoat Book Club & Jane Austen’s Influence

The Silver Petticoat Book Club is deeply inspired by the works of Jane Austen. So, it’s fitting that this month’s classic pick is her most renowned novel, Pride and Prejudice. We select books from all genres that feature love stories akin to Austen’s romances, but our club isn’t limited to romance alone—just as Austen’s works weren’t.

Announcing Downloadable Discussion Questions

Starting now, we’ll be offering downloadable discussion questions at the end of each month. You can find these questions on The Silver Petticoat Review’s website to print and use at your convenience. We’ll still post them on social media, but this additional format aims to make engaging with the questions easier.

Form Your Own Book Club Extension

You can make your experience even more enjoyable by creating your own mini book club, whether it’s with friends and family in person or virtually. Print the discussion questions, add some of your own, and create a lively, social atmosphere around our book picks. Use the hashtag TheSilverPetticoatBookClub and share pictures of your gatherings with us!

Book club meetings can be as simple as discussing the book over a Zoom call or as elaborate as hosting a Jane Austen-inspired tea party. We are also planning to post questions for previously discussed books, so you can explore past picks too.

April 2021 Book Club Pick: Pride and Prejudice

We are excited to announce that our April 2021 read is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This classic love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is more than just romance; it is a comedy of manners filled with satirical elements and brilliant social commentary. The novel also beautifully explores the love between sisters and women’s bonds.

To truly appreciate our book club choices, familiarity with Austen’s work is essential. We plan to cover all of her books over time, starting with this iconic novel. If you’ve never read Austen before, you’re in for a treat—this story of misunderstandings and prejudices will captivate you.

Synopsis of Pride and Prejudice

Elizabeth Bennet, known for her wit and independence, meets the aloof Fitzwilliam Darcy and quickly decides that he is arrogant. When she learns of Darcy’s interference in her sister Jane’s relationship, her dislike deepens. However, as events unfold, Austen’s novel reveals the pitfalls of judging by first impressions while showcasing the gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.
