Rediscovering Virginia Beach: A Year-Round Haven for Romance

Virginia truly is for lovers. From the Shenandoah Valley to the Atlantic Coast, you’ll find numerous romantic escapes in Virginia. You could rent a charming cabin in the Blue Ridge Highlands or stay at one of the intimate bed and breakfasts in Northern Virginia’s urban areas. And don’t forget the beaches! Virginia Beach, Eastern Shore Beaches, and the Chesapeake Bay Beaches each have their own unique charm.

Virginia’s beaches are a romantic haven all year round. Personally, Virginia Beach holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my husband and I began our relationship, where he proposed, and where we bought our first home and started our family. This summer, we returned to Virginia Beach and revisited some of our favorite spots, including restaurants that brought back many happy memories. Despite having our kids with us, the magic of Virginia Beach’s romance was undeniable.

If you’re planning a romantic stay in Virginia Beach, there are plenty of hotels along the oceanfront to choose from, each offering various packages. The Cavalier is an excellent option if you’re looking for a mix of classic and contemporary romance. This historic hotel, a Virginia Beach staple since 1927, has been recently renovated and now includes a distillery among its many amenities.

For those who prefer a more personal touch, consider staying in an Airbnb with ocean views. Active duty military and retirees can opt for the Navy’s Getaway Townhomes on 67th Street, which offer more privacy and direct access to quiet beaches. Additionally, there are delightful bed and breakfasts like Barclay Cottage, which features a lovely wraparound porch, and the luxurious Beach Spa Bed & Breakfast.

Virginia Beach has a lot to offer for couples seeking a mix of activities. First Landing Park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, providing hiking trails, kayaking, and boating options. You can have a picnic from Taste at one of the many shaded spots. The park also has campsites and well-equipped cabins for those who prefer to stay overnight.

During the summer, Virginia Beach comes alive with free outdoor concerts along the boardwalk, including performances by the Navy Band. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts also hosts various free events throughout the season. You can even plan your visit around a big-name concert at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater, with past performers including Zac Brown Band, Mary J. Blige, and Pentatonix.

Of course, the essence of a romantic getaway is enjoying each other’s company. You might rent bikes for a leisurely ride along the boardwalk, stop for drinks at a seaside café, or simply walk hand-in-hand along the shoreline. Or perhaps spend the day relaxing on the beach after a refreshing swim in the ocean.

And what’s a romantic escape without a special dinner? Terrapin Restaurant is an excellent choice for a cozy meal featuring farm-to-table ingredients and delectable desserts. For an outdoor dining experience, head to Catch 31 early enough to secure a patio table, where fire pits provide warmth and ambiance during cooler months.

If Italian food is your preference, Zia Marie in Chic’s Beach offers a cozy atmosphere and delicious rustic dishes. Try their roasted garlic appetizer and Shrimp ala Vodka, and don’t miss the Chocolatini for dessert. For a more laid-back vibe, Chick’s is a local favorite offering a casual dining experience with items like a shareable steamed shrimp basket.

Sometimes, staying in can be just as romantic. A pizza from Chicho’s paired with a good bottle of wine is always a winning combo, especially the Margherita or White Pizza. Taste, a local staple, offers made-to-order soups, salads, and sandwiches, along with boutique wines and craft beers, making it easy to create a delightful picnic or meal at home.

Virginia Beach is an ideal destination for a quick yet memorable romantic getaway. Whether you drive or fly in, you’ll find it offers just the right mix of beauty, charm, and activities to create unforgettable memories. Virginia Beach truly delivers on its promise of romance.
