The Merchant and the Rogue: A Review

Book Description

In 1865 London, Vera Sorokina enjoys immersing herself in adventure and mystery tales through Penny Dreadfuls, while she manages a book and print shop with her father. This shop provides financial stability and allows her to help struggling Londoners. However, Vera often feels lonely despite the stability in her life.

Brogan Donnelly, originally from Ireland, has been living in London for a few years as a Penny Dreadful writer. Along with his sister, he dedicates himself to helping the poor, finding a sense of purpose through his involvement in the secretive Dread Penny Society. Yet, he feels a sense of dissatisfaction and fears that London will never feel like home for him.

When Brogan and Vera’s lives intertwine, they are immediately drawn to each other, though their attraction comes with complications. Vera has learned not to trust writers, and Brogan suspects that something isn’t quite right at her print shop. As the criminal activities of the violent Mastiff begin to threaten their neighborhood, Brogan and Vera must join forces to protect the community. This requires them to share dangerous secrets from their pasts, eventually learning to trust one another.

Book Review

“The Merchant and the Rogue” is a delightful and light-hearted read that brings back the charm of 19th-century sensation fiction and penny dreadfuls. The story is filled with intriguing heroes, strong damsels, mystery, romance, and adventure, making it a thoroughly enjoyable book.

The novel offers three stories in one – the main plot along with two intertwining penny dreadfuls penned by characters within the story. Sarah M. Eden’s latest historical romance is part of the Dread Penny Society series but can be enjoyed as a standalone read, especially from a romance perspective. However, for a complete experience of the overarching mystery, you might want to read the entire series.

Overall Thoughts

If you’re looking for a fun and escapist read, “The Merchant and the Rogue” is a perfect choice. Sarah M. Eden crafts an engaging tale with captivating characters, a memorable romance, and a good measure of mystery. This book is ideal for a comforting summer read, and I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Dread Penny Society series.

Adaptation Recommendation

The Dread Penny Society books, including “The Merchant and the Rogue,” would make a fantastic TV series filled with adventure, romance, mystery, and action. Think of something like “Bridgerton,” but with a chaste approach and a new main story and couple each season.
