Hofsas House Hotel Review
We recently visited Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, and had the chance to stay at the delightful Hofsas House Hotel. We had such an amazing time that we couldn’t wait to share our experience.
Carmel-by-the-Sea and the Hofsas House have a romantic charm that we absolutely adore, and we’re sure you will too. Whether you’re seeking a budget-friendly romantic escape or a family-friendly destination, this charming hotel fits the bill perfectly.
A Brief History of Hofsas House
The Hofsas House was established by Donna and Fred Hofsas in 1947. Today, it remains under the care of Donna Hofsas’ grandchildren and daughter-in-law, who continue to uphold her legacy. The hotel boasts a charming Bavarian-inspired style with European artistic touches, featuring beautiful paintings by artist Maxine Albro. Donna’s friend Maxine painted the Bavarian-themed mural at the hotel’s entrance in 1957, and three other artworks by her are displayed in the lobby. Fred Hofsas also contributed his artistic talent through a mosaic coat of arms that translates to “Leisure with Dignity.”
Donna managed the hotel until her passing in 1981, after which her family took over, ensuring the hotel remains a beloved landmark in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Meet Carrie Theis, Current Owner
Carrie Theis, Donna’s granddaughter, has been managing the Hofsas House since 2000. She is the third generation to run the family business. During our stay, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Carrie to discuss her family’s legacy and the enchanting inn. She exudes warmth and pride in continuing her grandmother’s vision of a family-friendly refuge.
Artist-In-Residence Program
A unique aspect of the Hofsas House is its Artist-in-Residence program. Last year, they collaborated with an artist and will be introducing a new artist-in-residence for National Poetry Month. The event, featuring songwriter and poet Rags Rosenberg, will be held by the outdoor pool and is open to the public. This initiative beautifully blends the hotel’s familial warmth with support for the arts.
75th Anniversary Celebrations
To commemorate its 75 years, Hofsas House is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 12, from 5-7 pm, with free food and drinks. It’s more than just a hotel; it’s a community. Join them to celebrate this remarkable occasion.
