Book Summary: In Spite of Lions

Anna decides to leave a lifetime of abuse at home, not to escape, but to find freedom by traveling to Africa. On her journey, she becomes friends with Mary Livingstone, the wife of missionary David Livingstone. When she arrives, she follows the Livingstone family into the African interior to assist with their work.

Mary tells Anna, “To become a strong African woman, you must endure physical pain. It will hurt, but that doesn’t make it bad.”

However, Anna’s past has left her ill-prepared for her new life’s challenges. Although the tribal chief accepts her, the villagers are suspicious. As she learns basic survival skills, she gets caught in the political conflict between the Boers and her new African family. All the while, her unresolved past continues to haunt her.

Review

The premise of In Spite of Lions intrigued me, as did its excellent reviews. It’s rare to find books with this kind of historical setting. The story differs somewhat from what I expected but still succeeds in transporting me to another world.

A World of Characters

One thing I love about historical fiction is “meeting” people from the past. Before reading this book, I knew little about the Livingstones, but now, like Anna, I feel I’ve lived among them. Their complete dedication to their mission is inspiring, as is their love for the people they serve. Their marriage is not just about love but also about shared sacrifices and service, portraying a mature relationship founded on more than just emotions.

Mary serves biscuits and soup, emphasizing the importance of strengthening both spirit and body.

Chief Sechele, a leader of the Bakwena tribe and friend to the Livingstones, is one of the most unique characters in the story. His passion for everything British, his thirst for knowledge, and his newfound faith are fascinating. His fierce protectiveness and wisdom make him almost unbelievable, yet he was a real historical figure, perhaps even more devoted to his people than David Livingstone.

Anna’s Journey

Living with only the bare necessities, Anna finds a profound sense of happiness. Contrary to her mother’s teachings, she discovers that joy doesn’t depend on material possessions.

Anna’s story unfolds as she leaves everything she knows out of faith, not fear. She faces numerous hardships in Africa: political unrest, the threat of war, daily survival skills, animal attacks, and drought. The harsh conditions are vividly described, making you appreciate what you often take for granted.

Despite these challenges, Anna grows into a woman of remarkable courage.

Pros and Cons

Fans of traditional historical romances might find “In Spite of Lions” lacking in the romance department. Although there is a love story, it doesn’t feel fully integrated into Anna’s character development.

The book offers a more sympathetic view of British colonialism in Africa than is historically accurate. The conflict leading to the Boer War is portrayed with the Boers as villains, which simplifies the complex history.

The inclusion of the Livingstones means the book has a faith element, but it’s subtly woven into their lifestyle and work, rather than being preachy.

Overall, In Spite of Lions exceeded my expectations in a good way. It’s perfect for fans of historical fiction who appreciate well-researched stories with compelling characters.

Adaptation Recommendation

In Spite of Lions would make a fantastic feature film. The Livingstones and Chief Sechele provide rich material for a movie. The story is compelling, and the setting is unique. Emma Watson, with her combination of fragility and strength, would be an excellent choice to play Anna.

Content Note: The book includes a detailed animal mauling scene and some descriptions of battle violence.
