The most romantic moment this month has to go to Jane and Rafael from Jane the Virgin.
After five amazing seasons and 100 episodes, it was finally time to find out if Jane and Rafael would get their happy ending. Thankfully, when the series finale aired this week, the show stayed true to its telenovela roots, ending with a wedding and a happily-ever-after.
Romantic Moment of the Month
This month had several standout romantic moments, but it’s hard to beat the pure optimism of Jane the Virgin’s ending. While the Logan and Veronica wedding was beautiful and long-awaited, the unexpected ending took away from the romance of it.
Jane the Virgin is a great example of how to tell a unique story without disappointing the audience. In today’s cynical world, many writers favor unhappy endings, but audiences still love a happy ending. So, we’re picking the wedding of Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) as the romantic moment of the month.
The Lead-in
Jane Villanueva has been through so much with her fiancé—an accidental insemination, a kidnapping, an evil twin, a husband coming back from the dead, and now their final hurdle. She pleads with a local bus driver to help her get to her wedding on time.
With the main villain, Rose, defeated and Michael having his own happy ending in Montana in the previous episode, the finale focused on giving the remaining characters their happy endings rather than introducing new conflicts or cliffhangers.
Before Jane and Rafael can get their happily-ever-after, some “fun” obstacles appear. Rafael makes a grand gesture by delivering Jane’s revised novel to the publisher, but gets arrested for speeding. Jane has to pick him up, but she doesn’t have a car. She convinces a bus driver to let her use the bus for $5000, and they finally head to their wedding.
The Romantic Moment: Jane and Rafael
Jane’s narrator, Mateo, mentions how much Jane loves her family, God, grilled cheese sandwiches, writing, and Rafael as she walks down the aisle. Jane, with tears in her eyes, approaches Rafael, who is also emotional. It’s a heartfelt moment.
During the ceremony, Alba shares some poignant words, setting the tone for this idyllic wedding. She explains how Jane and Rafael’s journey had more twists than a telenovela, but they fought for each other and are now exactly where they are meant to be.
Alba then invites Jane’s parents to join in a special Mexican tradition. Jane and Rafael kneel as a “lazo” is placed around them, symbolizing everlasting unity. This moment is special as it includes authentic Mexican wedding traditions, adding a unique touch.
When it comes time for vows, Jane and Rafael are too emotional to speak, so they read each other’s vows instead, keeping the moment intimate. Petra brings the rings, and Jane and Rafael exchange them as symbols of love and fidelity, sharing two quick kisses. After many obstacles, Alba finally declares them husband and wife, and they kiss passionately—a perfect homage to telenovelas and romance novels.
Their story doesn’t end there. The family and close friends join in for traditional wedding photos, full of love. To cap off their journey, Jane and Rafael sit against a tree, enjoying their special day. Rafael asks how Jane ends her “book” about their lives, and she reveals it becomes a telenovela. Jane looks into the camera and winks at the audience, a meta moment thanking everyone for watching and celebrating their love story.
This show will definitely be missed.
