The Silver Petticoat Book Club, which began in summer 2020, is growing and we plan to make it even better this year, so stay tuned!

Previously, we alternated monthly between contemporary books (published after 2000) and classic books (published before 2000). We intend to stick with this tradition but with a slight tweak. Given that some classic books are particularly lengthy, we might extend the reading time to two months for those. As a result, there may be consecutive months featuring new books to keep things balanced.

What Do We Cover?

Our book club focuses on books with love stories, whether they are the main plot or a subplot, spanning various genres. We aim for a tone reminiscent of Jane Austen’s work, avoiding books with continuous profanity or overly explicit content. However, not all selections will be completely clean or wholesome. If a book includes explicit content or profanity, it won’t be pervasive, and we will provide content warnings as needed.

The Silver Petticoat Book Club January 2021 Pick

We’re excited to announce our first book of the year: “North and South” by Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1854. This Victorian romance, edited by Charles Dickens, is a passionate and romantic story. Imagine a collaboration between Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Charlotte Brontë—that’s what this book feels like.

Many of you might know the excellent period drama adaptation of “North and South,” starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. This adaptation is considered one of the best, and Armitage’s performance as John Thornton is unforgettable.

Whether you’ve read the book before or are new to it, you’re in for a treat. “North and South” is a book that stands the test of time and can be enjoyed repeatedly.

Book Synopsis (from Penguin Classics)

“North and South” brilliantly weaves a love story with themes of profit and humanitarian ideals, remaining as relevant today as when it was first published. This edition, with an introduction by Patricia Ingham, explores the clash of geographical, economic, and social class differences along with gender roles portrayed in the novel.

Margaret Hale moves from her comfortable home in Hampshire to the industrial town of Milton after her father leaves the Church. Initially repelled by her new surroundings, she begins to develop a strong sense of social justice as she becomes aware of the local mill workers’ struggles. Her tumultuous relationship with mill-owner John Thornton adds depth to the novel, blending personal feelings with broader social concerns.

Elizabeth Gaskell, born in London in 1810 and raised in Knutsford, published her first novel, “Mary Barton,” in 1848. She was a contemporary and friend of Charlotte Brontë, whose biography she authored.

Join the Silver Petticoat Book Club

We’ll be discussing “North and South” during the last week of January on our social media channels.
