As Catherine hurried across the dark lawn back to the house, she spotted the General, now holding only a candle, leaving the convent building. Worried he might see her, she quickly hid in the shadows.<\/p>\n
She then saw something that truly frightened her\u2014a ghostly figure in grey, illuminated by the moonlight. The eerie figure glided toward the greenhouse and then back to the dark building as the light from the General\u2019s candle disappeared.<\/p>\n
Terrified, Catherine ran back to the house and into her bedroom. Her husband, Henry, was alarmed. \u201cCatherine! Are you all right? Did something scare you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a person, Henry. It was a ghost\u2014a Grey Lady!\u201d Catherine replied, almost breathless.<\/p>\n
Henry was startled. \u201cWhat? But how could you know about the Grey Lady legend of Northanger Abbey? I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever mentioned it to you. It\u2019s unbelievable that what you saw matches the legend.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know what I saw, Henry,\u201d Catherine insisted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe you saw something, but it couldn’t be a ghost. Maybe it was someone playing a trick,\u201d Henry suggested.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw your father too,\u201d Catherine revealed. \u201cHe walked into the convent with what looked like food, and then the Grey Lady appeared after he left.\u201d<\/p>\n
Henry looked worried. \u201cI\u2019m not sure what my father is up to, but he has a history of cruelty toward his tenants. Perhaps this lady you saw is connected to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Henry, can we help her?\u201d Catherine asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know how. The estate manager, Claiborne, knows most about my father\u2019s dealings. Hopefully, he’ll prevent anything truly criminal,\u201d Henry said, though he didn\u2019t seem convinced.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor now, we\u2019re safe. We should leave my father to his peculiar ways. Tomorrow, we\u2019ll be gone from this dreadful place. I\u2019ll write to our agent to keep an eye out for any abuses when we\u2019re back at Woodston. My father won\u2019t like having his misdeeds exposed,\u201d Henry reassured.<\/p>\n
Catherine shivered. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to be home, Henry,\u201d she said as she quickly undressed and joined her husband in bed, seeking comfort in his embrace.<\/p>\n
