His only hope is to find a missing certificate proving the valuable shares his father left him years ago. Just when all seems lost, Michael and his sister experience an unexpected surprise when Mary Poppins returns. The beloved nanny from their childhood arrives to save the day and takes the Banks family on a magical, fun-filled adventure.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS REVIEW

I felt like I was stepping back into my childhood on Thursday afternoon. I revisited No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane and fell in love all over again. The familiar home, the park across the street, and the unsettling bank all come together in a story of love and loss. While Mary Poppins is there to look after the new generation of Banks children, she’s really there for the whole family. It’s nostalgia at its finest. Mary Poppins Returns is delightfully whimsical, in the best way possible. It’s practically perfect in every way!

Emily Blunt beautifully captures the spirit of Mary Poppins. Her quick-witted speech is stern yet inviting. She’s approachable despite her aloof demeanor. Blunt skillfully portrays the duality in Mary Poppins’ character. What struck me the most was how Blunt made the character her own. She didn’t try to mimic Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. Of course, the signature mannerisms were there—the winks, the slight smiles, the faux modesty. But Emily Blunt achieved the ultimate feat by making an iconic character entirely her own.

Helping Emily Blunt is the ever-charming Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack. He kicks off the movie and instantly draws you in. His sparkling eyes and mischievous smiles will have you grinning along with him, even if you don’t know why! His energy and distinctive voice add an extra layer of fun to Mary Poppins Returns. “Trip a Little Light Fantastic,” a nod to “Step in Time,” is pure energy and joy. Plus, the sweet hint of romance between him and Jane Banks gives audiences an “aww” moment.

Mary Poppins Returns is filled with cameos that will tug at your heartstrings, especially Dick Van Dyke’s. There are other delightful cameos I won’t spoil, but each one left me smiling.

THE MUSIC OF MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Mary Poppins Returns takes you back to familiar places with brand-new music. Naturally, comparisons to the original Mary Poppins are inevitable. Unfortunately, the songs in Mary Poppins Returns aren’t as memorable as those from the original. You probably won’t leave the theater humming the new tunes. But to be fair, the bar was set pretty high.

That said, the songs are still enjoyable and bring a lot of emotion to various scenes. For instance, when Mary Poppins sings “The Place Where the Lost Things Go,” it’s a truly magical moment. This scene showcases Mary Poppins’ warm heart as she comforts the children over the loss of their mother. Moreover, when the children sing this song to their father, it highlights the role reversal between Michael and his kids. Then there’s the snarky “Can You Imagine That?” where Mary Poppins mocks the magic she displays before the children. Lastly, the opening and closing song performed by Jack, “(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky,” serves as a love letter to London—and it’s simply lovely.

Overall, though, it’s the original score that truly shines and captured my heart. It honored the original Mary Poppins by weaving in strands of “Feed the Birds,” “The Life I Lead,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and more. These hints of original songs come at the most touching moments, reminding us of the family’s history.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Go see this movie! It’s magical and wonderfully crafted. The visuals are stunning and the costumes are absolutely glorious. As a sequel to a beloved classic, Mary Poppins Returns will carve its own place in your heart. You’ll enjoy the journey through the imagination of P.L. Travers and the wisdom of a nanny whose heart is full for the children she looks after around the world. Mary Poppins Returns is a classic in its own right!

Content Note: PG

Where to Watch: Catch it in theaters while it’s still showing!

Have you seen Mary Poppins Returns?
