Captain Thomas Scott, who commands one of the Fishing Fleet ships, enjoys the thrill of the open sea. \u201cSeasickness has two stages,\u201d Captain Scott said as he strolled over to Caroline, his jacket flapping in the breeze. \u201cFirst, you fear you’ll die. Second, you fear you’ll live.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not seasick,\u201d Caroline replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why are you leaning over the edge like that?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was looking at the water.\u201d<\/p>\n
As he came closer, their gazes met. He quickly looked down. \u201cYou know it\u2019s pitch-black out there without the moon. It\u2019s better to look up and enjoy the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked up. \u201cUrsa Major,\u201d she whispered, feeling a wave of sadness. She traced the stars with her eyes, remembering how her parents would point out constellations to her and her sister, Josephine.<\/p>\n
With her father deceased and her mother and Josephine out of reach, Caroline pondered whether becoming the family spinster would have been so bad. Yet, she realized her decision to seek new connections and love might be the right one.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you know all the constellations or just Ursa Major?\u201d Captain Scott asked.<\/p>\n
Shifting her gaze back to him, she replied, \u201cI know many, but not all. Some aren\u2019t visible from the northern hemisphere.\u201d Realizing her tone sounded academic, she quickly redirected the conversation. \u201cWhat brings you out from your wheelhouse, Captain?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe needs of the ship are my responsibility, not just the wheelhouse,\u201d he said. \u201cBesides, stretching my legs and admiring the stars helps me remember their beauty, beyond their navigational use.\u201d<\/p>\n
She was surprised by his sentiment and even more so when she realized he was looking at her, not the stars. He quickly diverted his gaze. \u201cAre you apprehensive about traveling to India?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI find the prospect of a new adventure exciting,\u201d Caroline admitted. \u201cI enjoyed traveling with my parents as a child. What about you, Captain? Has life at sea been adventurous, or were you ever hesitant about your career?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSailing is the family business. My father would have punished me if I\u2019d chosen otherwise,\u201d he said, surprising her with his candor. <\/p>\n
\u201cDoes the adventure suit you, or does it make you nervous?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially, I was apprehensive, especially with new routes. Now, my schedules are steady, and my routes vary little. My concerns are more for others embarking on new journeys, unaware of what lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
She frowned, confused. \u201cSurely you don\u2019t worry about me, Captain Scott.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tightening his grip on the railing before releasing it, he gave a quick bow. \u201cI\u2019ve intruded on your stargazing long enough. Good night, Miss Gray.\u201d<\/p>\n
She curtsied in return. \u201cGood night, Captain Scott.\u201d<\/p>\n
